Kari Eichen

Kari Eichen

Kari is a force to be reckoned with and there isn’t anything that can slow her down. Eichen has overcome injuries and still gone the ultimate distance by completing the 2014 Ironman Florida. Not only did she complete that, but she also completed 4 full marathons since she started running back in 2010 including the Chicago Marathon. Advice she wished she had when she first started is “If it hurts, don’t push it!”.

Coming from humble beginnings, Eichen started with the Couch to 5k program and has done a variety of races from 5k to marathon and several triathlons. Her favorite mantra is “No matter how fast or slow you are, you are still lapping everyone on the couch.” After finishing a long race, you can find Kari relaxing with her dogs Oakley and Forrest (who also have their own Instagram account).

The drive to keep up with races can be difficult to maintain but Kari has her family who helps support her and is the very reason she was able to finish her Ironman Florida race. With an extensive list of accomplishments, Eichen has it in her to do anything!

Social media: Instagram, Facebook & Dogs Instagram

Current running shoes: I am usually a Hoka fan, but I am currently trying out a pair of New Balance 860 v12. The rest of the time you can find me in my Oofos, since they are basically the only thing I can wear that don’t kill my feet.

Current watch you are wearing: Garmin Venu

Most memorable race: There are a few for different reasons. Ironman Florida (2014) was my biggest accomplishment. It was a difficult day, and the only reason I finished it was because my family came to support me. That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Chicago Marathon was the best and probably biggest/most fun race. Detroit Free Press Marathon and Half Marathon (I did the Half) was the coolest because you go over the Ambassador bridge into Canada, then come back through the tunnel. I have a pic somewhere straddling both countries.

Years doing running/triathlon races: Since 2010. I started with the Couch to 5k program. I’ve done multiple running races ranging from 5k to marathon, and several triathlons. Now I run for fitness. I would love to get back up to longer distances, but I don’t have the drive I used to have.

Favorite meal the night before a race: I don’t really have a favorite pre-race meal, but I love a good steak and baked potato. I can’t say no to a spaghetti dinner.

Advice you wish you had when you first started: If it hurts, don’t push it!

Favorite running mantra: No matter how fast/slow you are, you are still lapping everyone on the couch.

What is your favorite PR?: I got 2:10 at my second half marathon, which let me to believe I could train for a sub 4 marathon (there was a time limit). That did NOT happen.

Are you more of a winter runner or summer runner?: Summer. I feel more accomplished when I sweat.

Have you ever been injured from running/triathlon?: I have a laundry list. IT band, plantar fasciitis, Morton’s Neuroma, shin splints. sprained ankle, achilles tendonitis, to name a few.

Do you have a pre-race routine?: Wake up and arrive early. Parking can be unpredictable, and extra bathroom time never hurts.

What is the farthest you have ever run at one time?: I’ve done 4 marathons, including Ironman

How do you spend your day after finishing a long race?: Food, shower, TV binging and napping with my labs Oakley and Forrest!

It’s not always easy to be your own motivator, share your best motivational words and remind Kari she always has it in her to finish anything she starts!
